Sharing is Caring

In my first blogpost, it’s mentioned that people who are happy like to give more. Giving is an act of love; when you give your belongings to other people, that means you are sharing your happiness with them. But what effect will giving have on you? How can giving make you more happy?

Experiments have been conducted in which a group of people are given money, and half of them are required to spend it on themselves while half are required to spend it on other people. Contrary to their own expectations, the half who spent the money on others consistently get more pleasure out of the experience than their non-altruistic colleagues.
On a wider level, a 2010 study considered survey data from 136 countries to see whether people who answered yes to the question "Have you donated money to charity in the last month?" were happier overall. A clear correlation was found in 122 of the countries; in fact, on average it was found that donating to charity had a similar impact on happiness to household income doubling! data source: www.givingwhatwecan.org

Majority of people who are active in charity organization share testimony that doing altruistic activity is generally an extremely positive experience, giving you the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a genuine difference for other people, even for the world.

  1. To the people that do not want to necessarily share, do you think they have their reasons or are just being selfish? I really like the article! Do you think it may be helpful to focus on specific charities and how they contribute to society as an example?

  2. I agree with the idea that people who are sharing their happiness,or giving, are happier. But shouldn't the act of giving be about helping others, not yourself?

  3. I like your idea because it is very true that people are ignorant these days. Sharing with other people will double one's happiness. I also like the video you put in because it's a great visual to convey someone who's ignorant.

  4. Nate, I really like the article and the video that you posted! I agree that people would get greater pleasure out of giving to people, however do you think in the study that the people only felt pleasure because they had to give the money to other people?
