The Reasons for Google's Success

Of all the search engines and tech companies, why has Google been one of the best? According to the article,       “GOOGLE REVEALS ITS 9 PRINCIPLES OF INNOVATION” by Kathy Chin Leong, their are multiple reasons for google’s huge success. Let’s get started with the ten reasons why Google has been such a successful company.

  1. Google’s main focus has been on the user and their capabilities while using their search engine. One example of how google changed the user to be more people friendly is the “Instant search feature.” In the article it states that the amount of time saved with this feature is equivalent to giving back mankind 5,000 years after a year of collective use. As proven, google is willing to go the extra mile to enhance the user interface of their search engine.
  2. Google’s mindset towards every project is, “improve things by 10 percent.” The article states that the reasoning behind the 10 percent is that it allows people to think outside the box. This is how google is able to think in a creative and innovative manner.
  3. Google’s most effective way of making products like Google Maps and Google Chrome is by taking advice from their consumers and applying it to their software. In the article it stated that in 2008, when Google Chrome was first launched, the software wasn’t perfect and the user interface wasn’t the best. But every 6 weeks they took advice from their consumers and applied updated to their software. Now Google Chrome is the number one browser in the majority of countries. Gopi Kallayil, Google's chief social evangelist, stated "You may not have perfection in your product, but trust that your users will get back to you."
  4. Another reason for why Google is so successful, is due to the idea of free time. Every employee is given 20 percent of their work time to pursue projects that they want to explore. The belief is that if a person is passionate about what they’re working on they will have a better chance of making a difference. One example was stated in the article, “an engineer planning a trip to Spain found that he could not get a close-up view of the hotel since the road was too narrow for the Google Street View car to enter. He later adapted a Street View camera to fit on a specially-made Google tricycle to go places too narrow for a car and tourist locations that ban autos from approaching the premises.” The free time allows Google to stay innovative and improve everyone of their products.
  5. Consumers are a crucial to Google’s products. In the article it stated that when google first created the Android platform they knew they didn’t have the best developers. So they decided to open it up to the public. Then several apps started to come in, each one helping Google’s company and creating apps for millions to use.
  6. One of Google’s mottos is the idea of failure. Employees are encouraged to attempt projects with the preconceived notion that they will fail. The failure will allow for innovative and successful creations from the failure.

According to Google, the most important principle is having a mission that matters. The positive attitude to helping millions even billions of people across the world helps the company. It allows for each person to help others and work for a better future.
  8. Google is always creating new products and inventions. They never stop creating products and won’t stop because they enjoy making the world a better place for the future.
  9. Lastly, Google has proven that they enjoy picking the right employees for the job. They focus on attitude and appreciation for people before brains because the most important thing for Google is the people.
