If people should pursue what they are passionate about, so why many women chose to leave architecture?
After doing the research, I came up with three most common reasons why women leave architecture:
- Study architecture is not an easy thing. Even the architecture students who is not yet in the work field have to pull all nighters most of the time of the week.
- It is hard for women to balance architecture with motherhood. Once women have women have their family and children, it is even harder to keep up with their work, especially in the field of architecture.
- The field of architecture is sexist. There are all kinds of opinions on women in architecture, some people think women are less credible than men; some people think men are considered more capable than women for doing the same task.
While it is impossible to change the difficulty of this field, women need to be mentally and physically ready to face any hardships in the process. Also, one need to be very committed once he or she decided on this major. One thing that I think women need to carefully think about before choosing this major is do they truly love this field, if not, they better change their major as soon as possible because I think people in general can tolerate the pressure and hardships if they truly love and believe in what they do.
On the other side, someone need to speak up for the women or gender discriminations in other the fields. and show people that women can be just as successful as men because the percentage of gender discrimination is big, but surprisingly not a lot of people know about this. Now, some people ask why company should hire women when they need to leave the job during maternity. Because their talents! There are many female architects out there that are very successful. Certain unique talents are worth waiting for because it is beneficial to the company.
