Music today is dispersed to the listener through a multitude of different ways. There is no longer just vinyl records, CDs, and traditional radio. People are listening to more music through mediums like non-traditional radio and interactive streaming, and physical format sales are dropping greatly. Because of this change in the way we listen to our music it is hard to understand how much money musicians are receiving from their actual music.
It isn’t as easy as just adding up their total record sales. The contracts artists have with streaming sites are more complicated than people think with many factors. We can get an idea of how much artists in total are making from these other mediums by looking at this graph from buzzfeed.com.

Artists don't make any money from traditional radio anymore because of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. They do on the other hand make a large amount from Pandora, SiriusSM, and Spotify. The percent of revenue artists make from each company is different and the revenue each company makes is different. With those two factors Spotify makes the most money for artists out of any non-traditional radio or interactive streaming company. Some estimate that each stream on Spotify is from $0.006-$0.084 in royalties. On the other hand, Graham James, a spokesman for Spotify, says, “Everybody wants to break it down to per stream, but that’s just not the way to look at it.” It is a complicated process, but as long as people keep paying for their music musicians will be making plenty of money.
