- Is finding free music online legal?
- Yes. It is legal on some sites, but it isn’t truly ethical. By downloading free music you are getting great music and giving nothing. Musicians rely on fans and listeners to buy their music to support their career. A musician can make money other ways, but the free downloading of music can hurt a musicians source of income so greatly that they may not be able to support themselves anymore. They may have to give up on their dreams and find a new job just to survive, and this means no more future music and no more concerts. If you really enjoy a song, buy it and not only receive good music but also know that you are allowing thousands of musicians to make a living at what they are born to do.
- Can musicians be greedy for asking money for their music?
en.wikipedia.com Well, it is their right to ask for money since it is their music and hard work, but greed really depends on the musician. The perpetuating myth that all musicians are evil because they ask that the people who enjoy their music pay for it is annoying. A musician that is struggling for example obviously needs the money to support his work and get by in life. And, a popular musician that is very talented that makes a fairly decent amount of wealth and stays humble can still deserve a lot of money without being greedy. But, when it comes to musicians who are making hundreds of millions of dollars they really shouldn’t be earning any more money unless they are donating it. Bono does a good job of this. He is the third richest musician of all time with $600 million and he has recently released a U2 for free on iTunes. So, it is possible for a musician to decide whether or not to charge for their music. If they do charge, it is hard to tell if it is greed or if they have truly earned it.
- At public events such as the Olympics shouldn’t musicians perform for free as an opportunity to showcase their talent?
- No. Sure it is an opportunity for musicians to showcase their talent, but they have spent much time and hard work to achieve that talent. They deserve to get paid just like any worker at a public event. If they don’t get paid then a police officer or caterer shouldn’t get paid for their hard work and training. Even politicians then should technically take a salary suspension because they are honored to run their country in such a great time as the Olympics.
